Patterns of drug taking in patients with chronic airflow obstruction.
A questionnaire on the pattern of drug taking was completed by 185 patients with chronic airflow obstruction. Of these, 49% admitted to taking their prescribed therapy regularly and 33% could be regarded as being fully compliant. The use of increasing numbers of drugs was not accompanied by a fall in compliance. Regular drug taking was better in patients (particularly females) with asthma than ...
متن کاملSpontaneous sternal fractures in four patients with chronic airflow obstruction taking corticosteroids.
Four patients with chronic airflow obstruction developed spontaneous sternal fractures. All had received repeated courses of high dose corticosteroids and three were receiving long term treatment with low dose corticosteroids. It is important to consider sternal fracture in the differential diagnosis when patients with chronic airflow obstruction present with chest pain.
متن کاملDeterminants of expiratory airflow in patients with chronic airways obstruction.
This paper examines the relationship between the intrathoracic and bronchial pressures and the flow time course during forceful expiration in patients with severe chronic airways obstruction and tracheobronchial collapse. After an initial peak flow, the flow rate (V) of forceful expirations usually fitted the patient's maximum expiratory flow volume (MEFV) curve. The great reduction in flow aft...
متن کاملThe pattern of breathing in patients with chronic airflow obstruction.
1. The pattern of breathing in 12 patients with severe irreversible airflow obstruction has been studied during ventilatory stimulation by rebreathing CO2. Mean maximum tidal volume response was only 1.23 +/- 0.30 litres (mean +/- SD); this represented 65% of mean measured vital capacity and 82% of mean measured inspiratory capacity. During the course of rebreathing mean total breath duration w...
متن کاملAspects of chronic airflow obstruction.
This report questions several commonly used definitions and commonly accepted concepts. It suggest that the term, "chronic airflow obstructions," should replace the terms, "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease," "chronic obstructive lung disease," or "chronic airway obstruction," because it is flow that is obstructed. It is suggested the term, "chronic mucous hypersecretion," be used, rather t...
